Why does perfectionism seduce us?
Why does it have so much power over us?
Do you remember being a child? We didn’t worry about being perfect.
I didn’t care if my trees were blue as I painted with abandon. It didn’t matter if I had all the steps right as I danced to the wonderful music. I didn’t worry about singing off key as I sang along to my favorite songs.
Learning and growth doesn’t marry well with perfectionism. Do you remember the saying that we “learn from our mistakes”? As adults we may need to embrace the spirituality of imperfection.
Practicing the spirituality of imperfection allows us to be teachable and to rest in grace.
For instance, if you are afraid you won’t get it right, you may never embrace the wonder of meditation. If you’re worried about how you’ll look exercising, you may miss out on the fabulous benefits of yoga.
Over the summer, I urge you to try something new. Try something knowing you won’t get it right the first time or the second or even the third.
If you havn’t read “The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brene Brown, perhaps that's a book to dive into this summer. And then let’s talk about it and swap stories about how we embraced life differently this summer!
